The project was carried out at the Technische Universität in Wien (during the course “Destination Moon”), in collaboration with Ottokar Benesch, Daniel Galonja, and Thomas Milchram, students in architecture.
Lunar Base
Top View
The idea is to use a unique shape and two different arrangements of the module (A and B in the next figure) to build a big base made up of ten modules, and to have the final geometry of the base. The truncated octahedron allows for the creation of different structural design configurations and we chose this geometry to abandon the idea of a 2D base, and to have a 3D geometry.
The base is composed of 10 modules: - 4 modules for Greenhouses & Living - 2 modules for Greenhouses & Sanitary - 1 module for Living & Dining - 1 module for Medical & Sports - 1 module for Communication - 1 mobile module for Research and it can contain up to 8 people. (Dotted lines represent the airlock, to move from one module to another)
Because of the prohibitive conditions of the lunar environment, hydroponics results the only way of cultivation on the Moon. The greenhouse constitutes the core of the BLSS. In fact, the system performs all the basic functions of a life support system based on a natural cycle regenerative process, providing basic and continuous life-support requirements such as food, drinking water, cleaning water, and a breathable atmosphere, by using plants as the central recycling component for waste.
The design of the greenhouse for oxygen takes in consideration the use of a plant called Beema Bamboo.
The Greenhouse for food will be structured in two parts, interconnected among them: one for vegetables (hydroponics), and the other for the fishes (aquaculture).
A.M.E.L.I. (Artificial Multiple Enhanced Linguistic Intelligence), represents the core of the module. A.M.E.L.I. will be the "super computer" that will resolve all crew’s problems, from the storage of the materials, food, and power, to the power supply, problems relate to the pressure of the inflatable, and heat. It will appear from the inner membrane (made of silicene).
A.M.E.L.I. is also a big screen able to show beautiful landscapes. Landscapes are just an example, but think what does it means living in a closed ball for long, long time.
